Energy Saving House
Close to the Village
This modern designed house is located just outside in a traditional Mani traditional village which has 3 three tavernas, supermarket, bakery and even a cobbler. The property stands on a plot of 1,100m² which includes a parking area and landscaped garden.
Both the design and construction of this house are modern as the intention was to create a low-energy, internal environment that would not require fuel heavy air-conditioning or oil/gas central heating.
Insulation is key to stop the house heating up in summer and cooling down in winter. The reinforced concrete skeleton and brickwork was clad in 10cm thick insulation boards, which were then plastered using a state of the art pre-coloured plaster, that does not need repainting every few years.
The property consists of an open plan lounge, a kitchen with fully fitted wooden units and a breakfast bar. There are 2 bedrooms. The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. Large glass doors allow the house to warm up through the passive solar effect on sunny winter days and a centrally placed wood-burning stove effectively heats the whole house in the evening. For summertime, 2 steel pergolas have been erected, waiting to receive a temporary cover to keep the sun off the large glass doors. These coverings along with the insulation boards stop the fabric of the house heating up, which is not the case with traditional stone houses. From the rear terrace there are wonderful views of the Stoupa coastline.
